Exploring Our Local Trails

Updated: Aug 1, 2021

As we go into a few more weeks of restrictions, thankfully we are still able to take ourselves into the bush or out into nature. I have been making use of this time to explore some of the coastal trails on the Northern Beaches. It is refreshing to see so many people (socially distancing!) and walking in pairs whilst I am out there.

Some of my favourite trails are;

1. Nth Narrabeen to Mona Vale Headland return - 8km (2-21/2 hours)

2. Newport Beach to Bungan Beach return - 5km ( 45min - 1hr )

3. Newport - From the Crown to the Sea Trail - starting at Newport rugby Oval head up the stairs on the north side and follow the track to the top where you will emege next to the water tower on Wollombi Rd. folllow the road back down Plateau Rd, cross Pittwater Rd at the roundabout and head down the Serpentine for about 50m. On the left there is a track heading down the stairs towards the beach. Follow this down and either walk south along the beach or follow the road cutting across the beach at the corner of Beach Rd. You can have a coffee at Zubi @ Billys before heading up the track behind the Surf Club and walk along the headland back to Newport

4. Avalon Beach to Bangalley Head & Whale Beach

Although some of us are bound by different LGA's, there are many trails both well known and hidden, all over Sydney that are extraordinarily beautiful.

I was given a heads up earlier in the week from one of my great friends to a mass of amazing Lower North Shore bush walks, some of which I had no idea even existed! From Willoughby to Hornsby and Mosman, Middle Harbour and Waverton there are many different tracks with historical as well as natural significance. If you are local to any of these give them a go!

Here is a list of 16 of the 'Best Sydney bush walks. This is a pretty comprehensive list is but is by no means the 'be all and end all';

  1. Blue Gum Forest, Hornsby

  2. The Forest Path, Royal National Park

  3. The Resolute Track, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

  4. The Gibberagong Track, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

  5. Two Creeks & Little Digger, Garigal National Park

  6. Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase

  7. Stepping Stones to Cascades, Garigal National Park

  8. Riverside & Valley Walk, Lane Cove National Park

  9. The Couranga Track, Royal National Park

  10. Red Hands Cave, Glenbrook

  11. The Uloola Track, Royal National Park

  12. Jerusalem Bay Track, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

  13. Park Circuit, Manly Dam

  14. Lake Circuit, Parramatta Lake

  15. America Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

  16. Berowra Track, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

So no matter your location, there is something to be found close by. Set yourself a goal, make it significant. As my friend Di Westaway says, "make it a Big Hairy Audacious Goal"

Just get out there and do it!
